Fall '09 Happenings

We hope everyone is having a great fall. The economy seems a bit stronger, it finally rained in Austin, and things are ginning along quite nicely here in the world of small-time publishing. Below you'll find a few announcements and news items that we've been sitting on.

Strong Sales Launch Miles Nolte's Book Into National Distribution

First off: a HUGE thanks to everyone who has bought, read, reviewed, and pimped this book. We especially hope that all of the fly shops that got in on the ground floor have been able to make a few bucks. Sales have been brisk, but it appears that we may have only scratched the surface.

Recently, we signed a contract with Greenleaf Book Group to feature The Alaska Chronicles in their January 2010 distribution program. They feel that the book has significant legs outside of our established fly fishing niche, and we are damn excited about that concept!

To get the book in line with similar trade titles, Greenleaf has suggested a price reduction down to $24.95 per copy. We have already implemented that change, so I guess you can say that the book is now officially ON SALE.

As a part of this process, they also felt it imperative that we list the book with the Gluttonous Empire. As many of you know, I've never been a huge fan of Amazon.com, but I'm happy to report that they're currently offering the book at full retail, so for now the playing field remains level.

If you've read The Alaska Chronicles, here are a couple of places where you can post reviews and help us push it along. Word of mouth remains our best advertisement, and we appreciate the help of our readers.

Take a Picture & Win Cool Stuff

Because we suspect that many of you own The Alaska Chronicles, a sticker, and a digital camera, we have decided to give away some significant gear to those who can creatively combine those elements.

At the end of this year we'll hand out a TFO Axiom Fly Rod for the best picture with a copy of the book in play. For the best sticker photo, we'll award a Simms Dry Creek Backpack.

Some great shots have already been entered, but it ain't over until it's over, so get out there and start shooting. Click here for more details.

If you need more stickers, drop us a SASE to PO Box 160818, Austin TX 78716.

New Books In The Works

The Blitz

In late October I'll be traveling to Montauk, NY to work on the first installment of a large-format pictorial on fly-fishing the Northeast coast. Writer Pete McDonald will be penning the commentary and I'll be doing the photography work.

Our plan is to cover the Atlantic Seaboard from Maine to The Carolinas over an eighteen-month period and chronicle the huge, ravenous and eclectic fly-fishing culture of striped bass, bluefish, false albacore and whatever else we snag.

The end product (we hope) will be a coffee-table collaboration of crashing fish, pounding surf, slickered anglers, and screaming reels. The title and release dates are far from established, but keep an eye on this newsletter for further announcements.

Paddlefish

In an earlier life Christine Johnson attended private schools, hosted trendy parties, muscled through a high-pressure corporate gig, and did time in the Junior League. But life took an abrupt and curious turn.

Freshly divorced in 2005, Christine quit her job, walked away from the social scene and bought a drift boat. Since then she's fished and rowed across most of Montana and started a wildly popular blog called FlyFishChick.com. While some might consider that a dream escape, Christine still had an itch that she couldn't scratch.

Next June (staring at forty) Christine, and her paddling partner Banning Collins will board a canoe and paddle quite a distance for charity. 262 miles, to be exact. It's called The Texas Water Safari, and it's appropriately billed as The World's Toughest Canoe race.

At this point Christine is about fifteen chapters into the narrative that will eventually chronicle her training and hopeful completion of this hellish undertaking. True to her writing form, what we have read so far is an absolute gem. Besides her talent for humor, candor, and turn of phrase, what will ultimately make this book great is Christine's total lack of ego—or what her mother might call good judgment.

To learn more about The Texas Water Safari and their fundraising efforts, please visit www.TeamPaddlefish.com. Our best guess for a release date is Spring of 2011. Stay tuned.

What's Your Story?

If you've got a book idea rattling around in your head, I hope you'll visit our Perspective and Submissions pages and read up on our wants, needs and suggestions.

Fair warning: the one consistent element that has turned us away from a number of recent submissions is their smell of tradition. In simple terms, we are not interested in the books that everyone else has been publishing. Step out of your comfortable skivvies and work up something that hasn't been done. Then send it in.
